Operation Lightfingers: NSW Police & Retailers target Shoplifters
Operation Lightfingers was conducted over five days, from Tuesday to Saturday (11-15 December 2012), at a number of retail stores within Sydney’s CBD, Eastgardens and Broadway.
The blitz on shoplifting at major retail centres across Sydney in the lead-up to Christmas, resulted in police recovering over $27,000 in stolen goods, and more than 100 people arrested.
Redfern Region Enforcement Squad Commander, Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Bell, said the busy Christmas shopping period generally generates an increase in shoplifting.
“During busy retail periods, like Christmas and mid-year sales, we often see an increase in retail theft and fraud, with thieves attempting to capitalise on increased pedestrian traffic and busy customer service staff,” Detective Chief Inspector Bell said.
“These opportunistic thieves haven’t considered an increase in police, security and loss prevention staff, as well as improved surveillance technologies.
“Retail theft ultimately costs the consumer and we are working with retailers to not only stamp out the behaviour, but deter anyone thinking of indulging in this illegal behaviour,” he said.
